You’ve heard the saying that “Laws are like sausages; it is better not to see them being made”. Well, unlike laws or sausages – when it comes to monument signs, the more you know the better. Traditionally, monument signs were built using construction techniques that included the use of cement footings, rebar, brick and mortar, and stone masonry work. Those techniques were expensive and fraught with installation difficulties. While this “traditional” method is still used and has it’s place, a much more productive and cost-effective option has emerged. Foam-based monument signs make use of cutting edge technologies to produce a much more cost effective, durable, and easy-to-install product.
Monument sign construction bears little resemblance to techniques used in the past. It may sound odd, but modern foam signs are extremely durable. They’re impervious to weathering and extremely resistant to any kind of impact. How is it possible to create a durable product out of flimsy foam? The secret is in the way it’s made.
Foam monuments begin with a large block of polystyrene foam. Foam offers the advantage of being extremely workable and easy to shape. For example, the tool used to “cut” the large block of foam into basic shapes is a hot wire that cuts through the foam like a hot knife through a block of butter. Foam elements are shaped to look like very solid-looking walls, roofs, pillars and capstones, as well as an infinite variety of decorative elements such as stars, spheres, hearts, tapers and cones, etc.
Once the foam has been shaped to form the monument, it is sprayed with a hard coating. This coating gives the monument its tremendous durability. The coating consists of a combination of foam and plastic and is resistant to moisture, rot, and termites. It is designed to provide durability even during an impact. Take a moment to watch the “Hammer” video on the Apex Signs & Graphics YouTube channel. Tests have also shown that foam monument signs can withstand extreme weather conditions, including winds of up to 180 miles-per-hour.
The final step in foam core monument construction is the application of an attractive finish coat. A stucco finish is typical, and it can come in a variety of textures ranging from smooth to rough.
